What those two facts settle, though, is most of the buying decision. A square toe is cut broad and flat across the front, which gives the foot width where it wants it and gives the boot the presence that made the shape the default in western footwear. A pull-on has nothing to fasten, so the fit is entirely a matter of how the boot is cut: it must clear the instep going on, then hold the heel once the foot is home.

That makes trying them the only meaningful test. Do it late in the day, in the socks you mean to wear, and pull once and firmly. A little heel lift on the first walk is normal and disappears as the sole flexes; a lot of heel lift never improves. Wear it the way the shaft is cut for, with a straight leg sitting over the top, and let it earn its creases.
